DES MOINES, Iowa - A Des Moines man has claimed the top prize in an Iowa Lottery numbers game!

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Des Moines man has claimed the top prize in an Iowa Lottery numbers game!

Jim Bird, 73, of Des Moines claimed the jackpot for Iowa's Sept. 8 $100,000 Cash Game drawing. He purchased the winning ticket at Dahl's, 4121 Fleur Dr. in Des Moines and claimed the prize at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines.


Bird said he had no idea how much his ticket was worth until he made it to the lottery office. The clerk at Dahl's told him he needed to go there to claim his prize.


She said, ‘I think it's pretty big,’ he recalled.


Bird visited his doctor's office for a previously scheduled appointment before he came in to claim his prize.


I told him, ‘My blood pressure might be just a little high,’ he smiled.


When asked if he would share his money with his wife, Shirley, he laughed.


I'll tell you what: I had to borrow $10 [from] her this morning because I had to go get some gas in my car, he said, grinning. “She'll want her 10 bucks back!


Bird said he will use his prize money to go on a vacation with Shirley. He will also help his family.


I've got a good family, and that's enough, he said. “We're all lucky. We all have good health, so we're lucky.


The winning numbers for the Sept. 8 Cash Game drawing were: 6-7-14-18-26.


Winning numbers may be checked by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Winning numbers may also be checked through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633, at the lottery Web site at www.ialottery.com or with lottery retail outlets.
