Happy day in Cloquet

Happy day in Cloquet

Woman wins lottery jackpot totaling $853,492

Mary Ellen House was glad she was grasping a grocery cart. When the 56-year-old Cloquet woman discovered she had won $853,492 in the lottery, she confessed to feeling ``a little shaky.''

House was at the Cloquet Super One grocery store to pick up a few things when she asked a cashier to check her Oct. 19 Powerball Match 5 ticket. The cashier initially told House she had won $200,000. But after calling the lottery office, the cashier realized it was a bit more than that, and came chasing after House to tell her the news.

The lottery office deposited a first payment of $4,900 in her checking account on Wednesday. The balance, about $500,000 after taxes, will be deposited later.

House works part time for the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center's catering service, and also as a home aide for several Cloquet residents. Her husband is a Potlatch retiree.

The couple doesn't plan any major changes in the near future. They might buy a new computer, maybe a newer used car, but certainly not a new car, House said.

``They depreciate so much as soon as you drive them off the lot,'' she said, laughing.
