$1 of Hope Lottery Group Wins $200,000 Powerball Prize
TOPEKA, KAN. Twenty-six people, who have chosen to remain anonymous, have come forward to claim a $200,000 Powerball prize in the August 29 drawing. The group, which has been playing Powerball and Super Kansas Cash for four years and four months, formed their “$1 of Hope” lottery group in April of 2003. Each member spends $1 each week, and the group buys $13 worth of Powerball and $13 worth of Super Kansas Cash. According to the group, they have some special numbers that they play but also buy Quick Picks.
Twenty-three of the winners are employed at Russell Stover in Abilene. The group has a designated person who collects each player’s money. That person is responsible for purchasing the tickets and checking the tickets after each drawing.
Last Thursday morning on her way to work, a Russell Stover employee from Junction City checked the group’s tickets. Much to her surprise, the Check-A-Ticket machine said, “See store clerk. Claim at Lottery.” After checking the winning ticket three more times and getting the same message, she asked the clerk for help. After realizing what they had won, she was so excited she had to call for a ride to work.
The Junction City resident said she was thrilled that a nice group of hardworking, blue-collar workers won the $200,000 prize. She also went on to say that she plans to pay bills with her share and the rest will go to help other people, including a nephew and brother in Vietnam.
The winning ticket was purchased at Handy’s 2, located at 430 Grant Ave., in Junction City.
Another $200,000 Powerball prize still remains unclaimed from the September 6, 2006, drawing. The winning ticket was purchased in south central Kansas. The winning numbers for that drawing were: 02-21-27-35-55 PB 01. Players have one year from the date of the drawing to claim online tickets. September 6, 2007, is quickly approaching, so players should check their Powerball tickets carefully.
