Group Of 14 Sanitation Workers Splits $250,000 Mega Millions Prize
September 26, 2007 Most people would not want to start calling co-workers at 11:20 at night. But then, most people don’t have the news that Syed Latifi of Springfield had to share. He was calling to tell 13 of his co-workers that they had won $250,000 from the Virginia Lottery.
Everyone was excited, Mr. Latifi told Lottery officials. Someone said, ‘Don’t mess with me, Syed. It’s too late.
The 14 co-workers are employees of the Alexandria Sanitation Authority. They first started playing Mega Millions as a pool more than a year ago. On the night of September 14, 2007, they hit pay dirt.
The winning numbers for that drawing were 5-9-12-33-40 and the Mega Ball number was 27. Their ticket matched the first five numbers and only missed the Mega Ball number. Mr. Latifi purchased the ticket at the 7-Eleven located at 800 Franklin Street in Alexandria.
Since the prize was divided 14 ways, each member of the pool received $17,857. Along with Mr. Latifi, the pool members are: Patricia Dinkle of Spotsylvania; Patrick Dyson of Woodbridge; Robert Mason of Fredericksburg; Carlton Hallums of White Plains, Maryland; Chester Davis of Alexandria; Mark Alsop of Falls Church; Joel Gregory of Waldorf, Maryland; Jerry White of Fort Washington, Maryland; Alvin Edwards of Stafford; Gregory Mitchell of Alexandria; Sandra Dawson of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; Michael Monroe of Locust Grove and Michael Finley of Woodbridge.
Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $3.4 billion for Virginia’s public schools, currently representing about 7 percent of annual state funding for public education in Virginia. In 19 years of existence, the Lottery has awarded more than $10 billion in prizes to players and more than $1 billion in retailer commissions.
