Richmond Woman Finds A $100,000 Lottery Ticket In Her Wallet
January 28, 2008
You’ve heard the phrase “What’s in your wallet?” Apparently no one asked Virginia Grainer of Richmond, because she walked around with a $100,000 Virginia Lottery ticket in her wallet for nearly a month before she realized it was a big winner.
The ticket was for the December 19, 2007, Cash 5 night drawing. She bought the ticket at Varina Market, located at 4110 Darbytown Road in Richmond while she was running errands at lunchtime.
When she finally checked the numbers, she excitedly told her husband, “I think we did it! I think that’s us!”
The winning numbers were 4-9-10-31-33. She used the Easy Pick function and allowed the computer to randomly select her five numbers.
Cash 5 drawings are held daily at 1:59 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. The odds of winning the $100,000 top prize are 1 in 278,256.
Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $3.4 billion for Virginia’s public schools, currently representing about 7 percent of annual state funding for public education in Virginia. In 19 years, the Lottery has awarded more than $10 billion in prizes to players and more than $1 billion in retailer commissions.
